‘Upa’ means near and ‘nayan’ means to take towards or the eye or the Inner vision. A brahmanan who wears Poonal and doing Sandhyavandhanam promptly will get the inner vision to see god. In the poonal there will be Bramma Mudichchu (Knot) Mahalakshmi is residing in the knot. The poonal or the three sacred threads signify the three Goddesses- Parvati (strength), Lakshmi (wealth) and Saraswati (knowledge).
The sacred thread or the Poonal have nine fibers. The nine fibers are: –
1. Omkar,
2. Agni (deity of fire),
3. Nag (serpent),
4. Som (moon),
5. Pitar (ancestors),
6. Prajapati (deity of procreation),
7. Vayu (air),
8. Yama (deity of death) and
9. Vishvadevata (deity of the universe).
That’s why brahmanan wearing poonal and doing all karmanushatanam perfectly is called most powerful. Vaak Palitham (whatever says will happen) will be more. Saraswathi will sit in the tongue of Brahman.
Three strands are the three Vedas – Rig-Veda, Yajurveda and Samaveda on each of these strands. This knot is called the Brahmagatha (gatha means a knot) or the Brahmagranthi (granthi means a gland). [The knot of sacred grass (darbha) tied to a gold ring (pavitrak) is Atharvana Veda.
96 the length of the Poonal or the sacred thread is said in the Vedas as –
- 3 components (gunas) +
- 3 time periods (kals) +
- 4 Vedas +
- 7 days of the week +
- 12 months + .
- 15 auspicious dates (tithis)
- 25 principles +
- 27 lunar asterisms = 96

Study
Study of the Vedas begins in Shraavana with a upakarma and pauses in Magha with an utsarjana ritual, resuming the following Shraavana.
https://www.google.com/search?q=utsarjana
However, it was found that six months was not long enough to fully study the Vedas. Brahmins began skipping the break, and studied the Vedas throughout the year. Pardon is asked for studying the Vedas during the prohibited period, and for all sins committed during the year. Homas are performed, and the sacred thread is changed. The removal of the old sacred thread and the wearing of the new one are accompanied by ritual mantras.
