Upanayana means leading the disciple to the guru or Vedic teacher (upa means near Nayana means leading, taking). It also means providing him with an additional third eye: the eye of knowledge and wisdom (upa means additional, nayana means eye) through proper education. Consequently, the sacrament of the beginning of formal education too, has been called by the same name ‘UPANAYANA’.
